HHS and DNR Confirm Naegleria fowleri at Lake of Three Fires Media

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in conjunction with the CDC, have confirmed the presence of Naegleria fowleri in Lake of Three Fires located in Taylor county.Naegleria fowleri is an amoeba that commonly occurs in warm freshwater such as lakes, rivers, ponds and canals. In extremely rare cases, it can cause primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), a brain infection that may result when water containing the amoeba rushes up the nose and reaches the brain.

DNR weighs options for brain-eating amoeba

-Jared StrongState officials are considering whether to test more lakes, put up warning signs and launch a public-awareness campaign after a Missouri resident who swam at a southern Iowa lake recently died after being infected by a brain-eating amoeba.“We’re having those discussions about what happens next,” said Tammie Krausman, a spokesperson for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

The Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announces the launch of 988, The National Suicide Prevention Line (NSPL) three-digit number to call for individuals in suicidal crisis or emotional distress. Iowans who contact 988 will be directly connected to trained crisis counselors who provide crisis de-escalation and connect individuals to the services and supports they need, when they need it.

Gov. Reynolds and officials warn Iowans of dangerous Fentanyl and fake pills

 Today, Governor Kim Reynolds joined with state health and safety officials to warn Iowans about the growing threat of illicit fentanyl and counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl.  Counterfeit pills laced with fentanyl are increasingly being found in Iowa communities. In 2021, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s Criminalistics Laboratory analyzed 17,163 fentanyl pills disguised as prescription drugs.

Bobbins & Boards has port pillows available for anyone in need As a quilter, you are always looking for someone or something to donate to. Recently a group of quilters and friends from Janesville, Wisconsin came across a need for port pillows. I had no idea what these were or what they were used for. They are placed near a port that has been placed for chemo or dialysis treatment while wearing a seatbelt so it won’t rub.
